As we put the finishing touches on the Engine house, I thought you might enjoy seeing how the new laser cut shinglestrips will look. As usual we are making the roof of several layers.

Enjoy

An interesting find
Monday, January 21, 2008, 08:09 PM
Here's a suprise. i have always wanted to do a version of John Allens "squaw bottom depot". the problem is that there seem to be only two pictures of the burned up remains of the model. I had always believed that John made up this wimsical depot but I seem to be mistaken. While on an internet safari i chanced apon this photo Of the depot in Wallace, Idaho.
Hmmmmmm Squa bottom indeed.

One triangular depot for your enjoyment.
A model will probably be made but not for a wile. lets get the engine house finished first. It is by the way and I saw the beginings of the test build yesterday. I feel safe in saying that it will be the finest version of this structure ever made. Its beautiful, far more so that the original.

Building a better model
Thursday, January 17, 2008, 01:43 PM
In all thr years I have been doing this, I have found one trait of paper that is both a plus and a minus. Flexability.
I want to focus on the negative for the purpose of this tip and how to fix it.
Card stock has a springy quality. When you fold a piece of card you may notice that the surface next to the fold will bow in or out depending on the direction of the fold. Obviously walls do not usually bow out or suck in in real life. This is only a problem with bigger surfaces. as ageneral rule, models will appear more realistic if you can achieve a perfectly flat surface.
To achieve this there are two easy techniques. First and perhaps most obvious is to take care to make the tightest, sharpest folds possible. Making sure all the fibers that cross the fold are not resisting and springing the paper surface outward. Less obvious but highly recomended is to use scrap card from the kit to double up the wall surfaces from the back kind of like plywood. The extra layer of paper does wonders to add to the mass of the wall and will solve any springy problems you might have. So use that scrap and reinforce the inside of the model as needed.

thanks, Happy card modeling.

A special offer
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 06:04 PM
Our small town depot kit is really beautiful. It's available in HO and O right now.
So here's the offer. For the next month (till feb16th) with every depot order we are sending along our new "wistle stop" kit FREE.
The Depot is a big kit, the first of our master series. Its over 25 pages. the "wistle stop" is a companion with a small waiting room and in the same green and cream color.

About time
Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 05:48 PM
It's always about time isn't it? Time for work, time to be a good dad, good house keeper, or a good boy friend. we always think there's not enough but everything gets done anyway. I sent out another dozen kits today (then 10 came in too)but at least we are getting more current(i'm filling december orders now, wahooo)
man (meaning me) does not live by filling orders alone. i have to have some fun so I started designing a new kit. I'm calling it the cannery. not that it is a cannery but I had to call it somthin. this model is completely made up out of my head. Of course it uses real images for details (digital kitbashing)but there is no prototype. the only inspiration is from our visit to the scale structure craftsman show. when will it bw ready? ?????
On a more definate note. bro dave has started building an O scale engine house (the former project X) This is our limited edition G&D John allen tribute. It's huge in O scale. I plan on having 6 of them at the march meet in Chicago. these 6 will be a pre release and may not be laser cut so they will be available at a significant discount. probably $75. Its over 30 pages of jam packed art and details.
I'll be posting construction pix as I get them.

later
